Feldenkrais Method®

The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of somatic education. It utilizes a process of organic learning to bring habitual patterns to the realm of consciousness to improve sense of self and self-use.

What it is

The Feldenkrais Method® was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, a physicist and engineer. It’s based on the idea that by becoming more aware of how you move, you can move more efficiently, comfortably, and with less pain.

Rather than stretching or strengthening in the usual way, it uses gentle, mindful movements to retrain the nervous system.

What it’s used for

People use Feldenkrais to:

How it works

There are two main formats:

Awareness Through Movement® (ATM)

Group or individual classes where you are verbally guided through slow, easy movement sequences. The focus is on noticing sensations, effort, and coordination.

The Awareness Through Movement® class approach is designed to improve pre-existing movement patterns and to introduce new movement possibilities unexplored thus far. Participants are invited to explore movement sequences in a judgement-free atmosphere, where curiosity and playfulness are encouraged. By cultivating a state of full presence, you will ultimately experience yourself as a whole, in fully integrated motion where there is no dissonance.

Functional Integration® (FI)

One-on-one sessions in which the practitioner uses gentle touch to guide movement. Sessions are highly individualized.

The Functional Integration® session approach is designed to address individual movement habits through gentle, hands-on guidance, revealing more efficient and harmonious ways of organizing action. In a safe, non-invasive, and judgement-free setting, the practitioner listens through touch and invites the nervous system to recognize new possibilities beyond familiar patterns. Through this quiet dialogue of movement and sensation, awareness deepens and coordination improves, allowing you to experience yourself as a coherent whole—moving with greater ease, clarity, and integration.

How they complement each other

Awareness Through Movement® builds general awareness and transferable skills, while Functional Integration® addresses specific patterns or limitations. Together, they reinforce learning: Functional Integration® clarifies possibilities, and Awareness Through Movement® helps integrate them into daily life.
